Homeless by choice

Crazy as it may sound for the past 6 months now I have been living in my car. I’m 26, and have a great job, but I’m just sick of dealing with landlords, and huge deposits. I don’t see a reason for it. I’m trying to save money and this seemed like the way to do it.

Here’s the crazy part. If you don’t read my tech blog, NickStarr.com, you don’t know this, but I’m a huge Apple fan. I’m big into technology and love writing about it.

There is another guy who the same age as me, WORKS for Apple, and is living out of his car as well. He’s been doing it for 19 months now.

He seems to have it down quite a bit better then I do. He has a truck with a dome roof that he put a matress in. I’m still in my car’s passenger seat. He also has black felt up on the windows to prevent anyone from peering in while he is sleeping.

We do share a number of the same type of ideas. Order out or buy small qty. Shower/brush/shave at the gym. He has a storage unit like I do for all of the things that obviously won’t fit into the vehicle. He even doesn’t like coffee, but still goes to coffee shops for the wifi, just like I do.

Check out these articles about his story, and also his blog.

    Nick,

Thanks for clarifying your living situation. I’m a technology enthusiast myself and avid reader of your feed. I have to say that I have read some of your posts and came away scratching my head. How does Nick post so much and work, but still not have a stationary residence. I can’t even imagine having to come “home” to my car every day. Good luck to you in your pursuit of finding a place you can afford.

    Chris

Well, at least you’re not alone in this way. And actually, I do think that having a “permanent residence” can be over rated. But living out of a car wouldn’t suit me. Not for as long as you’ve been doing it.

Hey !! I finally found my way over here and imagine my surprise ! I live in Tampa but hang out in St Pete alot. I’m almost homeless (if it were up to the City of Tampa I’d be in the streets NOW) and I dig the free wi-fi. Maybe we’ll see each other around the coffee shops. It probably wasn’t private property, you know? Those guys are uninformed assholes without the second N. I picked this up on a st pete blog.
It’s better out loud as in:

You, sir are a UNIFORMED ASSHOLE

Sure, and they’re just doing their job. Sounds like you were in the way of a transaction …
